Malayalam writer and theatre artist Kamal C Chavara, who was charged with sedition for allegedly showing disrespect to the national anthem, has been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH) after complaining of uneasiness.

He had been taken into police custody yesterday in a case registered against him at Karungapally for allegedly showing disrespect to the national anthem in a Facebook post.

Kamal was handed over to police at Karungapally town and later released.

Police there had asked him to surrender either before the police station in that town or a local court.

Police said Kamal was admitted to the KMCH late last night after he complained of uneasiness.

Meanwhile, a man who visited Kamal at the hospital today was detained for suspected links with Maoists, following a case registered against him by police in Kannur district under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

He was identified as Nadeer, police said, adding a case had been registered against six persons, including Nadeer under various sections of IPC, besides Section 3 of the Arms Act for allegedly carrying weapons and threatening residents of a colony in March this year.

The remaining five are yet to be arrested, they said.
