The exotic weeds found in the wheat imported from Australia have been proven as harmless, the government told the Lok Sabha yesterday
The minister of state for food, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, allaying strong apprehensions expressed by Sumitra Mahajan (BJP) during the zero hour, said investigations by scientists have revealed that if the wheat was sown during off season or at a place where no wheat was grown earlier, then no harm would accrue.
He also said flour made from the imported wheat alongwith the weeds was also harmless. Mahajan had contended that the weeds would affect not only the wheat but also the area wherever it was scattered as it could result in severe crop damage besides harming the environment.
