Asus TUF FX505 review: A high-end performer with robust build quality

has been trying to bridge the gap between hardcore laptops and enterprise notebooks meant for corporate use. Recently, the Taiwanese manufacturer came up with the TUF series; a range of affordable machines meant for entry-level enthusiasts. While the first iteration of this series, the TUF FX504 was fairly impressive, the FX505 walks an extra mile to raise the bar even higher. .

While there's hardly any compromise in terms of inner components and build quality, does the laptop fulfil every gamer's desire? This is what we tried to find out.
.

In terms of design and build quality, the FX505 is compact with a bezel only 6.5 mm thick. The screen to body ratio is impressive but the laptop screen felt a bit flimsy. A bit of thumb pressure made the screen wobble. However, claims that the laptop meets a few US military grade reliability standards and the flimsy nature of the screen is made to survive accidental drops. While my carelessness led to quite a few falls, the laptop did survive with just minor scratches.
.

The back side, on the other hand, continues to be similar to that of the earlier TUF and ROG series laptops and Asus has come up with a new off-white backlit logo which gives the laptop an enterprise notebook feel instead of the usual gimmicky finish of laptops. The RGB keyboard borrowed from the high-end ROG series has highlighted WASD buttons and good key travel, but I disliked the inverted 'T' arrow design that has the left-right and down arrow keys placed a bit lower. I felt a little awkward while using it resulting in frequent accidental typos. The palm rest is panned out with the trackpad placed conveniently and I didn't face any problems while typing for long hours or playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
.

As far as performance is concerned, the FX505 is a great performer but with minor flaws. The test laptop I got had a GTX1060 graphics card, 16GB RAM, six-core Intel Core i7-8750H processor, 128GB PCIe NVME M.2 SSD and 1TB HDD mated to a brilliant 144Hz screen that made games like 'The Rise of Tomb Raider' and 'Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor' look lively. The PCIe SSDs is a serial expansion bus standard that flashes the data directly on the server motherboard. The point-to-point architecture lowers latency and boosts data transfer rates provides better performance other SSDs. While these innards enhance the performance, the heat management issue crops up after a few hours of extensive use. The fans become noisy in overboost mode, while the balanced mode fails to balance out the heat.
.

The screen by LG is perhaps the highlight of this laptop. The 144Hz high refresh rate helps produce buttery-smooth graphics with brilliant colour output making the players of FIFA 2018 look life-like. The screen also enhances the multimedia production capabilities of the laptop. However, the brilliant screen eats up a large chunk of the battery juice, producing average battery runtime. On the other hand, as far as connectivity is concerned, the laptop receives the latest Intel 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi that results in enhanced connectivity. However, the speaker output remains largely average and a front firing speaker is something the laptop manufacturers should consider going forward.
.

Overall, The TUF FX505 with a new design, compact form factor, RGB keyboard, 144Hz screen and better wireless connectivity makes for good value for money at a starting price point of Rs 79,990 (The TUF FX505 is available in different variations ranging from Core i5 to i7 H processors, up to 32 GB of memory, GTX 1050Ti or GTX 1060 graphics and a 17.3-inch variant is also available in the FX705 series). Apart from the minor flaws, the commendable gaming performance and brilliant screen make it a good purchase without putting a huge dent in your pocket.
