Even as India inches closer to having half a billion internet users, the number of registered domain names in the country is still a tiny fraction of those available globally. The US has a massive lead over other countries with nearly 110 million registered domain names followed by China with a little over 25 million domain names, according to a Zinnov ‘State of a Domain Name’ report. As compared to them, India had just 5.3 million domain names during this period with a domain penetration ratio of a mere 1.12 per cent. While this could be an indication of the fact that India being a mobile first digital economy, mobile apps take precedence over websites for users, this also points to the fact that not enough number of Indian businesses are going online.
