LG 4K OLED: The best TV money can buy

Though the 4K TV is one of the best, such content is still a novelty

It was pitch dark. The crew had just started exploring the structure. The atmosphere was tense and… then the phone rang, shattering the stillness! Putting the Prometheus Blu-ray on pause, I answered the call.

I returned to the movie, which I was watching on the 65-inch LG 4K OLED TV (Rs 5,79,900), and that's when I noticed something funny. Yes, it was dark all around but at the frame I had paused seemed to have a dark "border".

But that takes nothing away from the otherwise flawless "black" experience. Because of the deepest blacks promised on the LG OLED, I watched all my "dark" favourites - the Matrix Trilogy (on Blu-ray), Aliens (on DVD) and Star Wars (on 3D Blu-ray). I was hooked; the blacks were excellent, sunlight from the windows in my room didn't give rise to nasty reflections and wherever I sat on my couch, the viewing angle and depth were excellent.

LG's TV looks classy and the screen is amazingly thin: So much so that I was afraid it could snap while the TV was being installed. Thankfully, installation went without incident.

Upscaling to 4K resolutions is also great, provided one uses high-definition sources. I played some 4K and HD content from a pen drive, and was satisfied - the colours were brilliant without being oversaturated while the picture was sharp and there was no lag. HD channels from my TATASky DTH were also upscaled well, but the moment I switched to a standard-definition channel, things were as bad as other big-screen 4K TVs.

This year's Magic Remote is another pocket rocket. Yes, you have the gimmicky stuff but the minimalistic remote also has a pointer, a clickable scroll wheel and a prominent mute button. Another feather in the cap is the sound. The Harman Kardon speakers are exceptionally clear and you needn't invest in a sound bar.

The LG 4K OLED TV is possibly the best television one can buy in India at the moment, but 4K content is still a novelty. OLED screens, however, are the way to go.
