Star pacer Mohammed Shami has developed an ankle condition, which currently requires medical attention, as the Indian team management will hope that he regains fitness in time for the first Test against South Africa starting from December 26 at Centurion.
Shami's name has been kept in the Test squad with a star mark and the BCCI media release stated that he "is currently undergoing medical treatment and his availability is subject to fitness."
However, there was no specific information on the nature of the injury as to whether he suffered it on the field or more fitness related.
But it has been learnt that Shami was in Mumbai to consult a sports orthopaedic to diagnose his ankle condition.
"It is not exactly an on-field injury. It is an ankle condition that has developed. Shami came to Mumbai to consult the doctors. He will also go to NCA for rehab and recuperation work.

Australia's World Cup heroes Travis Head, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have all kept their respective base prices in the highest bracket of Rs 2 crore along with out-of-favour India pacer Harshal Patel for the IPL auctions, scheduled in Dubai on December 19.

Ignored for the upcoming assignment in South Africa, left-arm spinner Axar Patel responded with excellent figures of 3/16 as India got the better of Australia by 20 runs in the fourth T20I to win the five-match series here on Friday.
This was India's fifth consecutive T20I series on trot.
Rinku Singh blazed away to a 29-ball 46 while Jitesh Sharma smashed 35 in 19 balls before Australia pulled things back to stop India at 174 for nine after the visitors opted to bowl first.
Cruising at 167 for four in 18.3 overs, India lost five wickets for only seven runs in the last two overs, thanks to Ben Dwarshuis (3/40) and Jason Behrendorff (2/32).
In reply, Australia were restricted to 154 for seven in 20 overs as India took an unassailable 3-1 lead with a match to go. Matthew Wade remained not out on 36 off 23 balls.

It required a lot of mental fortitude to come back with an attacking mindset less than 72 hours after being clobbered, said spinner Axar Patel, who set up India's series win against Australia with superb figures of 3/16 in the fourth T20I here on Friday.
India have now taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.
Axar, who was hit for 22 runs in the penultimate over of the third T20I in Guwahti where India had failed to defend 222, was the chief architect in defense of a much lesser 174 for 9 in the fourth game.
"To stay attacking and be mentally strong is important as there is every chance to get hit in this format. When you go with an attitude to pick wickets, will feel much better," Axar said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
While there wasn't as much dew as it was at Barsapara the other night, Axar used his tried and tested formula of pitching it on the three sticks.
