External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar began a three-day visit to Moscow on Tuesday to strengthen the “time-tested” India-Russia partnership.
 
The visit comes amid tensions in India’s ties with the US, following President Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, including an additional 25 per cent penalty for importing Russian crude oil.
 
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), announcing the trip, said Jaishankar will co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation on Wednesday.
 
Vihar Lake overflows after heavy rainfall
 
Amid continuous rainfall in Mumbai, Vihar lake, one of the city’s key drinking water sources, started overflowing on Monday afternoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
 
With a storage capacity of 2,769.8 crore litres, Vihar became the sixth of seven reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai to overflow, providing relief to residents. Located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the lake overflowed at 2.45 pm, according to the BMC.
 
Last year, the lake overflowed nearly a month earlier, on 25 July. A day before, Tulsi lake had also overflowed following heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs.
 
More than 18 lakh women used free bus travel under Andhra Pradesh’s recently launched ‘Stree Shakti’ scheme on Monday alone.The initiative, a poll promise of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu ahead of the 2024 elections, was launched on 15 August.
 
“On Monday alone, over 18 lakh women availed themselves of zero-fare tickets, saving more than Rs 7 crore in a single day,” an official release stated. Monday marked the first working day since the launch of the scheme.

Mumbai airport hit by delays, 8 flights diverted amid heavy rain

Continuous rainfall and poor visibility led to major disruptions at Mumbai Airport, with 253 departures and 163 arrivals delayed till 3:30 pm, according to Flightradar. At least eight flights—six operated by IndiGo, one by SpiceJet, and one by Air India—were diverted to Surat, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.

8 killed in Nanded flooding, record 300 mm downpur in Mumbai: Maha CM Devendra Fadnavis

Crops spread across 12 to 14 lakh acres of land have been damaged due to heavy rains lashing different parts of the state,  Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday. Apart from the crop damage in 12-14 lakh acres of area, eight persons have died in Nanded district and there have also been cattle losses, he said.

Central Railway halts services on harbour and main lines amid waterlogging

The Central Railway on Tuesday suspended local train services on the harbour line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla after a section of the tracks was submerged following heavy rainfall, officials said. Services on the main line between Kurla and Sion were also stopped as tracks were waterlogged, they added.

350 evacuated as Mithi river rises

According to the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office, nearly 350 people from Kurla in Mumbai were relocated to safer places on Tuesday after heavy rains caused the Mithi river to swell. The rise in the river level, combined with high tide, typically results in waterlogging in densely populated areas such as Kurla and Sakinaka, as well as on railway tracks and near the Mumbai airport.

14 houses submerged in Palghar; several villages flooded

Officials said 14 houses along the riverbank at Gorat Gawari Pada in Wada taluka of Palghar were submerged, while 15 homes were inundated in Padgha’s Ganesh Nagar. Floodwaters also entered homes in Vasai’s Chandrapada and Sarja villages, as well as Khandipada and Odola in Chinchoti, forcing residents to move to safer locations.

Six persons have died and hundreds have been displaced over the last couple of days as heavy rains battered several districts of Maharashtra, causing floods, road blockages and widespread damage to crops.

Thane and Palghar in Maharashtra were hit by incessant rainfall on Tuesday, leading to flooded houses, wall collapses, and villages being cut off, officials said. Fourteen houses along the riverbank at Gorat Gawari Pada in Palghar’s Wada taluka were submerged, while 15 homes in Ganesh Nagar, Padgha, were also inundated.

Mumbai Central, Dadar, Worli register heavy rainfall; several areas waterlogged

Mumbai Central, Parel, Grant Road, Malabar Hill, Dadar, Worli and several other areas witnessed 40 mm to 65 mm of rainfall within just one hour, resulting in water-logging at multiple locations. Between 8 am on Monday and 6 am Tuesday, the island city received an average of 128.86 mm of rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 154.37 mm and 185.74 mm, respectively.
