Protests faced by Mamata Banerjee at Kamduni village in North 24 Parganas district when she had gone there to visit family of a college student who was raped and murdered, were indicative of the resentment against the West Bengal government, a CPI-M leader said today."The protest is a sign that common people are not taking things lying down. It is a proof of resentment against the government," CPI-M leader Surya Kanta Mishra said while addressing a rally here.He said it was strange that Banerjee undertook the visit 10 days after the incident, without informing anybody. 	Mishra also questioned her description of the protesters as "CPI(M) people", saying the entire panchayat had been won by Trinamool Congress and that too uncontested.

Protesting farmers from about 44 villages today visited the state capital Gandhinagar to voice their opposition against the proposed special investment region (SIR) in Mandal-Becharaji region which also houses Maruti Suzuki India's (MSI's) new manufacturing plant.In the absence of Narendra Modi, who was in New Delhi, the farmers met state revenue minister Anandi Patel and expressed their discontent over parting with their land for the SIR. They also gave a memorandum to Patel seeking withdrawal of SIR which is proposed over 50,000 hectare.The memorandum also stated that farmers are unwilling to part with their fertile land for the proposed project. A day after monsoon wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh's remote Kinnaur district, the chief minister, Virbhadra Singh, has been airlifted from the region as the area remained inaccessible. So far, ten people have lost their lives."The chief minister  and his staff, stuck in Kinnaur's Sangla valley since Sunday, have been airlifted," Kinnaur's Deputy Commissioner J M Pathania told Business Standard.Over 1,500 tourists, including foreigners, are stranded in Kinnaur, which borders Tibet. "Efforts are being made to re-open blocked roads," Pathania said. There are reports that 75 houses have been damaged and 18 vehicles washed away due to the rains. The 1,500-Mw Nathpa Jhakri project and the 1,000-Mw Karchham Wantoo project have been shut due to heavy silt in Sutlej. Those feed the northern grid.

Ten days after the brutal rape and murder of a college student in Barasat, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today visited the victim's family and promised stringent action against the culprits."I was about to visit the family. What has happened is really sad and horrific. We promise stringent action against the culprits. We'll submit chargesheet within 15 days and on behalf of the government will plea for death penalty," said Banerjee after the visit. "The culprits who have been arrested were under the support of local CPI(M)," she claimed."I'll not spell out the details of what came up in the meeting with the victim's family.
