Oppn MPs to hold protest in Parliament complex on Monday over Manipur issue

Amid the stalemate in Parliament over holding a debate on Manipur violence, MPs of various opposition parties have planned a protest on Monday near Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the Parliament complex to press for the prime minister's statement on the issue in both houses. Sources said leaders of various opposition parties who have now formed the INDIA alliance will meet in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and will discuss their further strategy in Parliament. After the meeting at 10 AM on Monday, July 24, the leaders will hold a protest near the Gandhi statue before entering both houses. The government has agreed to hold a short-duration discussion on the Manipur issue with the Home Minister replying to it, but the opposition is adamant on its demand for the prime minister's statement first, especially after a video of two women being paraded naked and assaulted in a Manipur village appeared on social media. Also, the opposition wants a debate ...

'INDIA' placards appear in LS for first time, Oppn to stage dharna on Mon

"INDIA" placards appeared in the Lok Sabha for the first time on Friday with members of the newly formed opposition alliance waving them as they pressed for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation in Manipur. Members of the Congress and Left parties, among others, stormed into the well of the House carrying placards that read "INDIA wants reply, not silence", "INDIA wants PM to speak in Parliament". This was the first time placards carrying the name of the opposition alliance appeared in the Lok Sabha. "Manipur is burning, PM speak about it" read a placard waved by a Congress member in the well of the House. The opposition alliance is scheduled to stage a joint dharna near the Gandhi statue in Parliament complex on Monday. Twenty-six opposition parties on Tuesday announced an alliance to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Oppn running from debate as their leader no longer MP: Anurag Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday hit out at the Congress-led opposition for "not allowing Parliament to function" and wondered whether it was because their leader was no longer a member of the Lok Sabha. In an apparent reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member in March, Thakur wondered whether it was the "desire" of some persons no longer members of the House to ensure that Parliament does not function. "Opposition is making excuses for not allowing the House to function. Some persons are no longer members of the House and it is their desire that the House should not function," said the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister outside Parliament. Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Parliament on March 24 after a Gujarat court convicted him and sentenced him to two-year imprisonment on charges of criminal defamation for comments he made about the Modi surname. The Manipur violence rocked proceedings in both Houses of ...

BJP charges oppn with not allowing discussion on Manipur in parliament

Even though the government was ready for a discussion on Manipur, the opposition disrupted Parliament proceedings and did now allow the debate to take place, the BJP charged on Thursday as it questioned the timing of the surfacing of a May 4 video of two women being paraded naked in the northeastern state. The BJP said that a discussion on the situation in Manipur would have sent out a "meaningful and positive" message to the people of the violence-hit state but the opposition parties did not let it happen because they felt that incidents of "misbehavior" with women in Congress-ruled states as well as the violence during the West Bengal panchayat elections may also come up. The BJP's charge came after both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day on the first day of Monsoon session amid slogan shouting and demands for a discussion on the situation in strife-torn Manipur. Even outside Parliament, opposition parties, including the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and the ...

BJP trying to create an environment against Cong in election year: Dotasra

The BJP was trying to create an environment against the Congress in the election year by accusing the Rajasthan government of bad governance but such attempts would not be successful, Congress Govind Singh Dotasra said on Thursday. "The Opposition BJP leaders are trying to create an environment in the election year that crime and corruption are rising and the Congress government is not able to provide good governance. They will not be successful in their attempts," Dotasra told reporters at a press conference here today. Dotasra said BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president JP Nadda, attack the Congress-led Rajasthan government but do not answer any questions regarding the promises the BJP failed to fulfil. They have not answered any questions about demonetisation, doubling farmers income, the farm laws, eliminating corruption, the Congress leader said. He further said, "I want to challenge the BJP leaders to compare the election manifesto of the Cent

Opposition gives no-confidence notice against Karnataka Assembly Speaker

Opposition BJP and JD(S) MLAs gave a no-confidence notice against Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader to the Assembly Secretary on Wednesday. It has been jointly signed by BJP and JD(S) MLAs, including former Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai and H D Kumaraswamy. "As the Speaker who has been elected by all the members of Karnataka Assembly, has lost the trust of the House, to remove him from the post, we request for an opportunity to move the motion as per rule 169 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly," the notice read. This move by the combined opposition came on a day when the Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic and unruly scenes as angry BJP legislators tore papers, which were copies of the bills and agenda, and threw them at Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani, who was in the Chair. Following this, Speaker Khader suspended 10 BJP MLAs for the remainder of the Assembly session for "indecent and disrespectful" conduct in the ...

NCP leader Sharad Pawar on Tuesday joined the opposition unity meeting here which will hold deliberations on giving the grouping of 26 opposition parties a name, structure and common agenda to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. While the first day of the meeting saw informal discussions followed by a dinner meeting, Tuesday will see formal deliberations. Opposition parties mantra is 'of, by and for family', says PM Modi

Launching a scathing attack on the opposition parties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday alleged that their mantra is "of, by and for the family". Virtually inaugurating the new integrated terminal building of the Veer Savarkar Airport here, he said that the facility will boost tourism and strengthen the economy of the archipelago. Taking a dig at the opposition meeting in Bengaluru, he said, "People are saying that this gathering is to promote corruption. The opposition parties have given a clean chit to the DMK despite corruption cases in Tamil Nadu. The Left and the Congress are also mum on panchayat poll violence in West Bengal despite attacks on their cadre." "They (opposition parties) are not concerned about the development of the children of the country's poor. Their common minimum programme is to increase corruption for their family. Democracy means 'of the people, by the people, for the people'. But these dynastic parties have the mantra of 'of the family, by the ...

Spoke to Sharad Pawar, he is coming for Oppn meet tomorrow: Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday said he has spoken with NCP chief Sharad Pawar and was informed that he would participate in the Opposition meeting in Bengaluru on July 18. Responding to reports that Pawar would skip the Opposition meeting on Monday and take part in it on Tuesday, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh rejected such insinuations, saying the official meeting of opposition parties is on Tuesday and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is only hosting a dinner on Monday. Asked about Pawar, Kharge, while interacting with reporters, said he has spoken with Pawar earlier in the day. "He said the (Maharashtra) Assembly is starting there today and he would like to be there (Mumbai). But he will be present for the meeting tomorrow. Selfishness has infested opposition unity: UP Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma

Selfishness has infested the opposition unity, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma claimed here on Monday, ahead of the two-day meeting of the BJP's rival parties in Bengaluru. Top leaders of 24 opposition parties are likely to attend the two-day brainstorming session to chalk out a strategy to unitedly fight the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Hitting out at the opposition parties' attempt to form a grand alliance, senior BJP leader Sharma said, "No matter how many alliances are formed, they will not be able to counter PM Narendra Modi." "Ninety-nine per cent of the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) has disintegrated. People do not have faith in leaders of opposition parties, while the faith in Modiji has increased," he said. "The (opposition) clan was never united. Internal cracks have always been there. With termite infestation, things become hollow from the inside. Selfishness has infested the opposition unity and is taking it towards its termination," Sharma told
