No place in America for violence, says Prez Biden after attack on Trump

US President Joe Biden on Saturday condemned the life-threatening attack on his Republican rival and predecessor Donald Trump and said there is no place for this kind of violence in America. Delivering remarks to the press at his Rehoboth Beach house in Delaware, Biden said he tried to get in touch with Trump, who is now with the doctors and seems to be doing well. Trump got injured during his election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania following an apparent series of gunshots. He was immediately escorted out of the venue by the US Secret Service. Law enforcement officials said the Secret Service shot dead the suspected shooter at the election venue. One person has died in the incident. According to CNN, law enforcement agencies are treating the incident as an assassination attempt. It is not immediately clear what type of weapon was used by the shooter. There's no place in America for this kind of violence, Biden said. It's sick and one of the reasons why we have to unite this country

Bullet pierced upper part of my ear: Trump after escaping assassination bid

Former US president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday said he was shot at during his rally in Pennsylvania and a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear. In his first statement issued on the social media platform Truth Social, 78-year-old Trump thanked the US Secret Service for saving his life. I want to thank the United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania, the former president said. Trump got injured during his election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania following an apparent series of gunshots. He was immediately escorted out of the venue by the US Secret Service. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country, he said. According to Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson

Biden attributes pressure to elites; voters paint a complicated picture

Considering her choices in this year's rapidly approaching presidential election, Rochelle Jones thinks both major party candidates should step aside. They just need to get somebody that's going to run this country right, that don't have any health issues, that care about us people, the 39-year-old culinary worker at Michigan State University said this week. As President Joe Biden struggles to recover from a disastrous debate performance last month, he has argued that desires for him to leave the campaign are limited to his party's elite. But Jones' sentiment reflects a more nuanced reality unfolding in some of the most politically competitive states, from here in Michigan to Pennsylvania and Nevada. In interviews this week, many voters said they still support Biden. But they also expressed concern that a lack of enthusiasm for his candidacy could cause a lot of Democratic voters to stay home, handing the race to Republican Donald Trump. Some are concerned as well about the impact

Biden seeks union leaders' support to reassure concerned Democrats

President Joe Biden met Wednesday with the executive council of the AFL-CIO, America's largest federation of trade unions, to shore up support from a critical constituency as he beats back continued calls to step aside in the 2024 campaign. I think of you as my domestic NATO not a joke, the 81-year-old Democrat told the crowd gathered at headquarters. Hours later in the Oval Office, when a reporter asked him about an opinion piece written by George Clooney in which the actor implored Biden to leave the 2024 race, the president responded with AFL-CIO! paused, pumped his fists and added, Go, go, go. The AFL-CIO said the president has been booked to attend the meeting for more than a year, but his participation now involves much higher scrutiny after his weak debate performance against Donald Trump raised fears about his ability to compete in November's election. His sit-down with union officials also overlaps with the NATO summit in Washington, where Biden is navigating geopolitics .

No plans to drop out of race against Trump: Biden tells Democrats

US President Joe Biden told congressional Democrats on Monday that he is "firmly committed" to running for re-election against his Republican rival Donald Trump and called for speculation over his candidacy to end despite mounting concerns about his mental fitness and the viability of his campaign. In a strongly-worded letter to some donors and Democrats who are demanding that he quit the race for the White House on November 5, Biden, the presumptive candidate of the Democratic Party, sought to address their growing concerns. "I have heard the concerns that people have their good faith fears and worries about what is at stake in this selection. I am not blind to them, 81-year-old Biden wrote in the letter to the Democratic lawmakers in the US Congress. I can respond to all this by saying clearly and unequivocally: I wouldn't be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024, asserted the president, who after his June 27 disastrous .

Senator Bernie Sanders sets conditions for supporting Biden in elections

Leader of the progressive movement, Senator Bernie Sanders, set a series of conditions on Sunday for supporting incumbent US President Joe Biden in the November presidential election. "We need a strong agenda that benefits working families and not just wealthy campaign contributors. The American people want change. It will either be the change of Trump's reactionary and xenophobic policies, or change that benefits working families," Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, said in a statement. Highly popular among youngsters and the working class, Sanders is considered as the leader of the powerful progressive movement in the country, which now has a sizable control over the ruling Democratic party. "Biden and Democrats can win this election if they address the needs of the working class," Sanders said. The statement gains significance given that the Biden campaign is experiencing a crisis after the president's poor performance during the June 27 debate against his Republican

Biden addresses Black church service as calls grow for him to step aside

President Joe Biden urged supporters to stay unified behind him at a rousing Black church service Sunday where the pastor referenced biblical teachings in declaring never count Joseph out, and blamed jealousy for intensifying pressure from some Democrats to abandon his reelection bid. Speaking from a stage flanked by sunshine from a pair of stained-glass windows at Mount Airy Church of God in Christ in northwest Philadelphia, the 81-year-old Biden laughed off concerns about his age, joking I know I look 40 but I've been doing this a long time. I, honest to God, have never been more optimistic about America's future if we stick together, Biden said. He didn't use a teleprompter, which has become more common since his disastrous debate performance last month but spoke from a prepared speech. His remarks followed Pastor Louis Felton likening Biden to Joseph and the biblical story of his coat of many colours. Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers, only to ...

Judge declines to scrap charges against Trump valet in classified docs case

The federal judge presiding over the classified documents case against Donald Trump refused Saturday to throw out charges against a co-defendant of the former president. Lawyers for Walt Nauta, Trump's personal valet, had asked US District Judge Aileen Cannon to dismiss the indictment against their client. They argued, among other things, that Nauta was charged because of insufficient cooperation with prosecutors' investigation and because of a personal animus that they say prosecutors harbored against one of Nauta's attorneys. Special counsel Jack Smith's team has denied all the claims, and Cannon in her four-page order Saturday said Nauta had not met the high bar required to get the case dismissed. Nauta and another co-defendant, Mar-a-Lago property manager, Carlos De Oliveira, are accused of conspiring with Trump to conceal evidence from investigators as they sought to recover classified documents that were taken to the Palm Beach, Florida property after Trump's presidency ...

Pressure on Biden to step aside, Democrats feel powerless to replace him

Bernie Sanders describes President Joe Biden's recent debate performance as painful. In an interview, he says he's not confident that Biden can win this fall. But the progressive senator from Vermont does not want Biden to step aside. Instead, Sanders, who served as Biden's chief rival in the Democratic Party's 2020 nomination fight, is calling on voters to adopt a maturity as they view their options this fall. A presidential election is not a Grammy Award contest for the best singer or entertainer. It's about who has the best policies that impact our lives," Sanders said. I'm going to do everything I can to see that Biden gets reelected. That's putting the best face on it. Nearly a week after Biden's disastrous debate performance, questions about his ability to remain in the race are intensifying among concerned Democrats. But there is also a growing sense that the party has trapped itself in a bad situation with no clear solution, caught in a primary process set up to protect Bid

Trump's campaign raises $331 mn in 2nd quarter, beating Biden's haul

Donald Trump's campaign says it outraised President Joe Biden in the year's second quarter, with a reported haul of $331 million. That number bests the $264 million that Biden's reelection campaign and the Democratic National Committee reported raising over the same period earlier Tuesday, eliminating Biden's cash advantage and potentially undercutting Biden's efforts to calm fears within his party after last week's disastrous debate performance, which has prompted calls for him to step aside. Trump's total includes $111.8 million that the campaign says it raised in June. That sum is less than the $127 million Biden reported raising last month, which includes more than $33 million on the day of the debate and in its aftermath. But Trump's campaign reports that it ended the quarter with $284.9 million cash on hand, compared with $240 million reported by Biden. President Trump's campaign fundraising operation is thriving day after day and month after month," Trump campaign senior ...

Republicans seeking to be Trump's VP were once his critics with differences

It's hard to refer to someone as Hitler and end up in their good graces, let alone potentially become the person they choose to help lead the country. But Ohio Sen. JD Vance's shifting position on Donald Trump over the years from onetime critic of the former president to staunch ally is a metamorphosis shared by many of Trump's potential running mates. It's not unheard of for a running mate to move beyond past disagreements with a presidential candidate. Joe Biden had a notably barbed exchange with Kamala Harris in 2020 when both were seeking the Democratic nomination. Biden picked her to be his vice president anyway. But the shift is more striking for Trump's potential running mates, in some cases requiring them to abandon long-held policy positions and recant vehement criticism. Here's a look at some of those shifts: JD Vance In a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose while promoting his book Hillbilly Elegy, Vance called himself a Never Trump guy and said of the soon-to-be-preside

After Joe Biden's debate debacle, Jill reassures that they are still all in

Jill Biden was right at her husband's side Saturday as they exited Air Force One to head for a pair of campaign stops at luxurious vacation homes on Long Island. And she got straight to the point when it was her turn to introduce the president at a tony fundraiser. Joe isn't just the right person for the job. He's the only person for the job, she declared. The first lady also told donors, Anyone can tell you what they want to do, but Joe Biden can tell you what he's done with his judgment, his experience, and his relationships with leaders across the globe. The first lady is trying to rally support for her husband after a dreadful performance in Thursday's presidential debate created fresh worries about President Joe Biden's age and his ability to compete in November's election and to serve another four years. The community college professor has been by her husband's side since he exited the debate stage as he faces what could be a defining challenge of his presidency the presiden

Debate upshots: Trump punches, even when wrong, Biden bows, even with facts

Thursday's presidential debate was a re-run that featured two candidates with a combined age of 159, but it went especially poorly for one of them, President Joe Biden. Already fighting voter concerns about his age, Biden, 81, was halting and seemed to lose his train of thought, sparking quick concerns among Democrats about the man they hope will keep former President Donald Trump from returning to office. For his part, Trump made repeated false claims and provocative statements. But Trump seemed smoother and more vigorous than Biden, who is only three years older than the Republican ex-president. The debate covered a wide range of topics and included a former president Trump not backing down from his vows to prosecute members of Congress and even the man he was debating. But the overarching theme was the difference between the candidates' performance. Here are some takeaways from the face-off. Style v. Substance Presidential debates are often scored on style and impression mor

Majority of debate watchers say Trump won debate over Biden: CNN Poll

Former US president Donald Trump turned in a better performance than President Joe Biden during the first of presidential debates, a shift from 2020 when debate watchers saw the 81-year-old Democrat as outperforming his Republican rival. During Thursday's feisty debate that lasted roughly 90 minutes, President Biden and 78-year-old Trump sparred over the economy, immigration, foreign policy, abortion and national security. Both the leaders called each other a liar and the worst president in the history of the US. Sixty-seven per cent to 33 per cent of the registered debate watchers said that Trump turned in a better performance, according to a CNN flash poll conducted by SSRS. CNN was the host of the first of the three presidential debates held in Atlanta. Before the debate, the same voters said, 55 per cent to 45 per cent, that they expected Trump to perform better than Biden. The poll's results reflect opinions of the debate only among those voters who tuned in and are not ...
