What is 404 Error

404 error or 'page not found' error is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol standard response code that indicates the server was unable to find what was requested. This message may also appear when the server is not willing to disclose the requested information or when the content has been deleted.

Whenever the web page is not found, because it has either a broken or a dead link, the “404 not found” web page is generated. This code has become one of the most recognisable errors on the internet.

When we are communicating, in computer networks, through HTTP, a server is required to respond to a request for web age.

In the Code, the first digit indicates a user error. The error can be that of a wrong Uniform Resource Locator URL. The next two digits indicate exact errors encountered.

Often the 404 code error is shown when the URL is deleted or moved.

The 404 code error message always comes with a human-readable “reason phrase” which can be understood by everyone. In most web browsers 404 code error messages come with the “page not found” phrase as suggested by the HTTP specifications.

There are different sub-status error codes in Microsoft’s Internet Information Services. They are not officially recognized by Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. They are also not returned by non-microsoft servers.

Here are the different codes which indicate more specific errors:

How to fix the error '404 Not Found'

1. Reload the page: It might be that the error 404 has appeared for the simple reason that the page did not load properly. This can be checked quite easily by clicking on the ‘Refresh’ button in your browser or also by pressing the F5 button.

2. Check the URL: Regardless of whether you have entered the URL address manually or been directed via a link, could be that a mistake has been made. For this reason you should check the specified path of the website. It could be that either you, or the person who entered the link, has mistyped something.

3. Go back through the directory levels: For example, if a URL of the following structure example.com/Directory1/Directory2/Directory3 causes a 404 error page, then you can always go back to the previous directory level (in this example: example.com/Directory1/Directory2) in order to check whether the desired page is linked there. All you need to do is clear the last directory in the URL. The link for the page you are looking for should be visible on the previous page

4. Use the website’s search function: Many websites offer a search function as part of their homepage

5. Contact the website

6. Delete the browser cache and cookies
