Who is Jagdish Mukhi

Jagdish Mukhi is the present Governor of Assam. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mukhi had previously been a prominent face for the BJP in Delhi. Born in 1 December 1942, he did his M Com from Shri Ram College of Commerce of the Delhi University (DU). He was actively involved in student politics before entering mainstream politics with the Janata Party in 1977.
 
Mukhi first contested a Delhi Metropolitan Council by-election in 1980. Later, he went on to represent Delhi’s Janakpuri constituency in the Delhi Assembly seven times starting 1980. His unbeaten streak was broken in the 2015 Delhi Assembly election, which he lost to the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) Rajesh Rishi by over 25,000 votes.
 
Mukhi has held important ministerial portfolios like finance, planning excise and taxation, higher education in the Delhi government. The past positions held by him also include lieutenant-governorship of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. During his tenure as minister for higher education in the Delhi government, he was credited with launching Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University within eight months.
 
Mukhi also received the award for being the best planning minister from the then Union Urban Planning Minister Pranab Mukjerjee. During his stint as finance minister in the Delhi government in 1994, he banned lottery trade.
 
Mukhi has worked at different hierarchical levels within the BJP, holding positions like those of Delhi BJP general secretary, in-charge of BJP affairs for Jammu & Kashmir, and in-charge of BJP affairs for Haryana.
