Even before the votes cast in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election can be counted, the Congress unit in the state has written to the Election Commission demanding an inquiry into the possibility of Electronic Voting Machines being rigged.

Counting is due on December 8.

State Congress Vice-President Rameshwar Neekhra said in a statement today that the party had received a total of 42 complaints about malfunctioning of EVMs.

Anecdotally, it is usually the losing side that complains about faulty EVMs.

He said that complaints about malfunctioning EVMs had been received from many places, including Surkhi, Bhopal and Panna.

He said the same EVMs would soon be used again in the Lok Sabha polls and added that some steps need to be taken to restore the credibility of EVMs.
