Crompton Greaves Ltd has proposed a new unit in Madhya Pradesh.

The company, which already has two units for power transformer manufacturing in Madhya Pradesh, will set up the unit in Malanpur (near Gwalior) in Bhind district with an investment of Rs 5 crore.

"The company already has a unit in the Malanpur industrial area to manufacture power transformers, and the proposed unit will manufacture transformer-related components," a government official told Business Standard.

The official also said, "The company has been allotted a land area and they have started construction, although it is slightly late the new facility is expected to start production within 5-6 months from now."

The integrated plant at Malanpur plant manufactures distribution transformers up to 20MVA and 66 KV while the Mandideep plant manufactures power transformers of 132 and 230 KV capacities.

Although the government source declined to give details of the project, he said, "It will generate at least 40 jobs and is likely to cater to the existing unit in Malanpur."

The transformers division of Crompton Greaves, which started some 60 years ago with initial inputs for technology from collaborations with Brush Transformers and Hawker Siddeley Power Systems of UK, is learnt to have expanded its all units in Madhya Pradesh.

Further, the transformer division is known as the highest exporter of power transformers from India.

Crompton Greaves manufactures the widest range of power and distribution transformers and reactors from 160kVA to 415MVA, 500kV capacity. These transformers are used in power and industrial sectors, the Railways, process Industries, mines.

Despite a mother unit of India's power equipment giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, the state of Madhya Pradesh has a number of power equipment, especially power transformers manufacturing companies and the number is rising. "In fact the growing demand of power augurs well for small scale units and medium enterprise in the state," said the official.

The small scale and medium enterprises contributes, at least 100 in numbers, have a combined turnover of Rs 100 crore in the state.
