Budget carrier IndiGo's chief commercial officer, Sanjay Kumar has stepped down after twelve years at the helm.

Kumar is the second senior executive to quit the airline after chief executive officer Aditya Ghosh who left IndiGo in April.

Sanjay Kumar has resigned with effect from July 15 to pursue other career interests, the airline announced on Monday. William Boulter, currently chief strategy officer, will be taking over as the chief commercial officer.

"We are successful at what we do and Sanjay’s contribution has been very significant in getting us to the level we are today," IndiGo's co-founder and interim CEO Rahul Bhatia said.

"I am grateful for all his hard work since he joined in January 2007 and wish him all the best in his future endeavours," he added.

IndiGo is the largest domestic airline with a fleet of 168 planes and  over 40 per cent market share

The airline, on an average, operates more than 1,000 flights every day.

An aviation industry veteran Kumar had stints in commercial role in Air Sahara and SpiceJet before joining IndiGo in January 2007.

At IndiGo he oversaw all commercial functions like sales, distribution, network planning, schedules and cargo. In recent months however his role was curtailed as IndiGo management hired expatriate executives to strengthen operations. These changes came as the airline began planning for its next phase of growth including long haul operations.

IndiGo’s core operations revenue management, network planning and airport services are all headed by foreign staff handpicked by co-promoter Rakesh Gangwal.

Shares of IndiGo's parent InterGlobe Aviation declined nearly two per cent to Rs 1,164.55 in afternoon trade on the BSE.
