South Central Railway (SCR) handled 85.87 million tonne freight during the financial year 2009-10, as compared with 73.8 million in 2008-09, an increase of 16.3 per cent.
The freight loading performance during the just ended financial year is among the best on Indian Railways.
The Secunderabad division registered 58.43 million tonne, Vijayawada 16.08 million tonne and Guntakal division 7.5 million tonne freight loading.
Out of the incremental loading of 12 million tonne, coal accounted for 9.4 million tonne.
Despite large scale shortage of wagons, the SCR was able to record the highest freight due to streamlining its freight operations.
The wagon holding of SCR increased by two per cent, while the loading was increased by 16.4 per cent due to optimum utilisation of wagons.
In case of open wagons, which are used to transport commodities like coal, iron ore and raw material for steel plants, the wagon holding increased by 7.5 per cent and loading by 24.3 per cent.
The turnaround for these wagons was reduced by about 8.3 per cent from average 2.4 days in 2008-09 to 2.2 days in 2009-10, thereby increasing the wagon availability, according to an SCR release.
