Tata Power sets up 250 mw unit at Trombay

Company to invest around Rs 860 cr

Tata Power Company today announced the setting up of a new 250 mw power plant at its Trombay thermal station. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was inaugurated by Dilip Walse-Patil, the state minister for energy, medical education, higher and technical education.

Speaking on the occasion, Patil said, "This is a positive sign for Mumbai and the entire state. The setting up of the new power plant will help augment power supply to the city of Mumbai."

The 250 mw unit No.8 will use imported coal with a low sulphur and ash content. Total investment in the project is expected to be around Rs 860 crore and is scheduled to be completed in 28 months.

Adi Engineer, director, Tata Power, said the company was also planning to set up another 250 mw unit at the same location as well as a 100 mw diesel unit at Khopoli, close to the Trombay facility.

He said the company was planning to invest in an ultra-meg power project in the coastal belt in the state.

"We are right now finalising a 1,000 mw plant in the state. If we manage to procure a good site, we may look at scaling up that to 2,000 mw," Engineer said.

He further said work on 250 mw unit No.9 will start in three months and will be completed in 28 months. The 1,000 mw coastal plant will be completed by 2010 "" each unit will take about three-five years to complete with a time lag of seven-eight months between units, Engineer said.
