Gujarat bridge tragedy: Search and recovery operations end, death toll 135

The Gujarat government on Thursday called off the five-day-long search operation launched after the collapse of a British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Morbi town of Gujarat and the death toll remained unchanged at 135, according to PTI. State Commissioner of Relief Harshad Patel visited Morbi, located around 300 km from the state capital Gandhinagar, and announced the end of the ongoing search operation, launched on Sunday evening soon after the suspension bridge came crashing down, said an official release. Patel chaired a meeting with heads of various agencies involved in the search and rescue operation and took a call to end the operation after reviewing the situation, it said.

Delhi minister Gopal Rai calls high-level meet on Friday to discuss implementation of GRAP's final IV curbs

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai will convene a high-level meeting on Friday to discuss the implementation of curbs on polluting activities under the final stage of the Graded Response Action Plan, officials said on Thursday. 

Delhi’s 24-hour average air quality index spiralled to 450, just a notch short of the “severe plus” category as the share of stubble burning in the national capital’s PM2.5 pollution soared to 38 per cent amid stagnant conditions and favourable transport-level wind speed.   

As Delhi stood at the edge of a public health emergency, the Commission of Air Quality Management on Thursday directed authorities to ban the plying of four-wheeled diesel light motor vehicles in the city and adjoining NCR districts and the entry of trucks into the national capital as part of anti-pollution measures under the final stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Bihar bypolls: 31.90% voter turnout recorded in Mokama, Gopalganj till 1 pm

A voter turnout of 31.90 per cent was recorded till 1 pm in Mokama and Gopalganj assembly constituencies in Bihar where polling was underway for by-elections on Thursday, officials said. While Mokama recorded 34.26 per cent voter turnout, Gopalganj saw 29.90 per cent turnout till 1 pm, they said.

The bypolls to the two seats are the first election in the state after the formation of the 'Mahagthabandhan' government around three months back. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the de-facto leader of the JD(U), dumped the BJP and formed a new coalition government with the RJD, Congress and Left parties in early August.

Polls in two phases in Gujarat on Dec 1,5, results on Dec 8

Gujarat will go to polls in two phases on December 1 and 5 with the counting of votes on December 8 along with that of Himachal Pradesh, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Thursday.

 

Of the total 182 assembly seats in Gujarat, voting for 89 seats will be held on December 1 and the balance 93 seats on December 5.

RBI's monetary policy committee meets to finalise inflation report for govt

The Reserve Bank's rate setting panel on Thursday met to finalise a report for the government on why it failed to keep retail inflation below the target of 6 per cent for three consecutive quarters since January this year, said sources.

The report will be presented to the government as per the Reserve Bank of India Act, they added. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is headed by Governor Shaktikanta Das.

Odisha: 10.25% polling in first two hours in Dhamnagar by-poll

An average 10.25 per cent votes cast in the first two hours of polling in Odisha's Dhamnagar assembly constituency, where the by-election exercise began at 7 am on Thursday, an EC official said.

Long queues were seen in front of the polling stations even before voting started. The voting process, which is being held under tight security, will continue till 6 PM.

Delhi's air quality continued to be in the 'severe' category on Thursday, according to Central Pollution Control Board data

While the forecasters on Wednesday predicted the air quality was likely to improve on the back of stronger winds, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi stood at 426 at 9.10 am. An AQI of above 400 is considered severe and can affect healthy people and seriously impact those with existing illnesses.

India logs 1,321 cases in 24 hours; death toll climbs to 530,461; Active Covid cases dip to 16,098

With 1,321 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,46,57,149, while the active cases declined to 16,098, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The death toll climbed to 5,30,461 with nine fatalities which includes five deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprise 0.04 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.78 per cent, according to the ministry website.

UPA to protest across Jharkhand on Nov 5 against 'attempts to destabilise govt'

The ruling UPA in Jharkhand announced it will launch a state-wide protest against the "attempts to destabilise a democratically elected government" after the ED summoned Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren for questioning in an alleged illegal mining case.

 

A two-hour meeting of the UPA -- comprising the JMM, the Congress and the RJD -- was held at the CM's residence here on Wednesday evening, shortly after the summons was served by the agency.

President Droupadi Murmu begins maiden two-day visit to Mizoram today

President Droupadi Murmu will arrive in Mizoram on Thursday on her maiden two-day visit to the Northeastern state.

Polling underway in Telangana's Munugode assembly constituency bypoll

Over 2.41 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the election. There are a total of 298 polling stations and web casting would be done from all of them. Of the total, 105 booths have been identified as 'critical.'
