A voter turnout of 31.90 per cent was recorded till 1 pm in Mokama and Gopalganj assembly constituencies in Bihar where polling was underway for by-elections on Thursday, officials said. While Mokama recorded 34.26 per cent voter turnout, Gopalganj saw 29.90 per cent turnout till 1 pm, they said.
The bypolls to the two seats are the first election in the state after the formation of the 'Mahagthabandhan' government around three months back. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the de-facto leader of the JD(U), dumped the BJP and formed a new coalition government with the RJD, Congress and Left parties in early August.

The Reserve Bank's rate setting panel on Thursday met to finalise a report for the government on why it failed to keep retail inflation below the target of 6 per cent for three consecutive quarters since January this year, said sources.
The report will be presented to the government as per the Reserve Bank of India Act, they added. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is headed by Governor Shaktikanta Das.

An average 10.25 per cent votes cast in the first two hours of polling in Odisha's Dhamnagar assembly constituency, where the by-election exercise began at 7 am on Thursday, an EC official said.
Long queues were seen in front of the polling stations even before voting started. The voting process, which is being held under tight security, will continue till 6 PM.

Delhi's air quality continued to be in the 'severe' category on Thursday, according to Central Pollution Control Board data
While the forecasters on Wednesday predicted the air quality was likely to improve on the back of stronger winds, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi stood at 426 at 9.10 am. An AQI of above 400 is considered severe and can affect healthy people and seriously impact those with existing illnesses.

With 1,321 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,46,57,149, while the active cases declined to 16,098, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.
The death toll climbed to 5,30,461 with nine fatalities which includes five deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprise 0.04 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.78 per cent, according to the ministry website.

President Droupadi Murmu will arrive in Mizoram on Thursday on her maiden two-day visit to the Northeastern state.
Murmu is scheduled to land at the Lengpui airport near Aizawl at 1.50 pm, from where she will fly to Mizoram University (MZU) at Tanhril on the western outskirts of the state capital by helicopter to attend its convocation, officials said.
