Warning issued for Gujarat coast in wake of cyclone 'Nanauk'

IMD said that the sea is likely to be rough with winds blowing between 35-45 km/hour with temporary gust reaching 55 km/hour

Gujarat fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea for the 24 hours following the advancement of cyclonic storm ‘Nanauk’ in the Arabian sea. The storm is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a distant warning for Gujarat ports as the cyclone will intensify in next 24 hours. A warning is hoisted at a port when system of deep depression in the sea intensifies into a storm and is still out at sea.

In an warning issued by the weather department due to cyclonic storm, squally weather is likely to prevail along Gujarat coastline during the next 24 hours. Hence, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next one day. The IMD further said that the sea is likely to be rough with winds blowing between 35-45 km/hour with temporary gust reaching 55 km/hour.

The cyclonic storm Nanauk over east-central Arabian Sea moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 1430 hours on Wednesday about 710 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 590 km south-southwest of Veraval and 900 km east-southeast of Masirah Island (Oman). It would intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and would move west-northwestwards towards Oman coast in next 120 hours.

“Under the influence of this system, rainfall would occur at most places with isolated heavy falls over coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep during the next 24 hours. Strong winds speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph would prevail along and off Konkan and south Gujarat coast during next 24 hrs. Sea condition would be rough along and off Konkan, Goa and south Gujarat coast during the same period. Fishermen along and off Konkan, Goa and south Gujarat coasts are advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea during next 24 hours,” the IMD warning stated.
