In light of land acquisition and law and order problems in some states, the government has decided to revert to the December 2004 deadline for the completion of the first phase of the Rs 58,000 crore National Highways Development Project (NHDP).

Except for around 10 sections in the states facing such problems, work on the other sections was likely to be completed by the end of 2003, Minister for Highways B C Khanduri said here today.

The Golden Quadrilateral, which involves four-laning of highways between the four metros, was initially slated for completion in 2004. The ministry had subsequently advanced the deadline to December 2003.
