Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati yesterday ruled out a coalition government in Uttar Pradesh with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the United Front (UF) stating categorically that her party is ready to face fresh assembly elections.

Mayawati said, We are not hungry for power. We would accept the support of any party or front from outside.

The former Chief Minister claimed that she would not compromise on principles for power. She said that barring the BSP, no other party was ready to face election, so they were not demanding dissolution of the assembly.

The BSP leader stressed that the alliance between the BSP and theCongress still existed in Uttar Pradesh, and announced that her party would field its candidates on two of the 13 seats for the state legislative council from the assembly constituency, election for which is to be held on February 6.

Mayawati said that an understanding with other parties could not be arrived at for the use of surplus votes of the BSP during the biennial elections for the Upper House.

Asked whether former BJP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh was coming in the way of a BSP government with BJP support from outside, ayawati said that she did not want to comment on the internal matters of the BJP.

She, however, admitted that various BJP leaders had been giving different statements over the issue of government formation.

Mayawati admitted that top Bahujan Samaj Party and BJP leaders had discussed the issue of forming the new government but could not reach any conclusion.

She, however, ruled out the possibility of any talks between the state leaders of the two parties on the issue.

Mayawati said that she had written to Governor Romesh Bhandari on November 29 clarifying that the BSP would not support any party or front for forming the next government, but if any party came out to support the BSP from outside, it would consider the proposal.

We still stand by our demand, Mayawati reiterated, pointing out that there would be no compromise on the interests of the bahujan samaj.

Asked about the possibility of the BJP getting a chance to form the new government as a result of the Supreme Court hearing on the special leave petition by the state government, Mayawati retorted, What did the BJP get from the high court order on the basis of which they would get something there (in the Supreme Court)?
