The Mysore City Corporation and 208 civic bodies will go to polls tomorrow to elect their representatives in the municipal councils, after a year's vacuum.

Around 25,000 candidates are in the fray in the state, most of them belonging to the three major political parties "" Janta Dal (Secular), BJP and Congress "" for a little over 5,000 seats, About 340 candidates are contesting the 65 seats in Mysore.

Polling will take place from 7 am to 5 pm and the state government has declared a holiday. Counting of votes will take place on September 30.

Municipal elections in the state were postponed sighting one reason or the other for about a year, until the court direction to conduct the polls by September-end.

Elections in Mysore have assumed significance because of the Siddaramaiah factor. The former Deputy Chief Minister won the by-election from Chamundeswari constituency after deserting Janata Dal (S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and joining the Congress party.

He has campaigned intensively for the Congress candidates in Mysore and the neighbouring taluks, with his staunch followers.

If the Congress fails to muster a majority in the Mysore City Corporation, the Janata Dal (S) and BJP may form an alliance and try to capture administration. Independents could play a decisive role either way.

Apart from the Mysore City Corporation, seven other local bodies will go to polls in Mysore district. Elections will take place in all 204 wards. Out of 688 polling booths set up in the 65 wards in Mysore, 214 are identified sensitive and 338 very sensitive.

The total number of voters number 7,12,450, including 3,56,663 women. The 139 wards in the seven local bodies have 1,53,844 voters, including 75,928 women. Of the 163 polling booths, 67 have been identified as sensitive and 82 as very sensitive.
