The Karnataka government has drawn up a Rs 88 crore action plan to ensure drinking water supply to rural areas for the ensuing summer.

Food, civil supplies and rural water supply minister Govinda Karjol told reporters here on Friday that the action plan has been forwarded to the chief minister for approval.

"The government has identified regions which are facing drinking water shortage. Once the action plan is approved, the Rs 88 crore will be distributed to the task forces constituted at the district level to implement water supply schemes," he added.

The task forces will be responsible for commissioning and repairing borewells, providing piped water and supplying water to remote villages using mobile tankers.

"At present, water is supplied to 300 villages through tankers. Another 200 villages may be included in the list next week if the situation does not improve," he added.

As many as 21,008 hamlets and revenue settlements also faced acute drinking water shortage. As an emergency measure, a sum of Rs 10 crore has been released.
