UP's industry, trade and stock exchange have reacted in a negative way to the news reports of UP Chief Minister Mayawati's support for the state's division into three entities.

The reaction has been instant and hostile.

Tarun Khetrapal, president, Indian Industries Association, told Business Standard if the plan was carried out, UP would be left with nothing. Each small state will be given massive aid by the central government, which will also mean subsidy for industry. The creation of one state, Uttaranchal, had meant a large shifting of industry to that state.

Now the of creation two more will take away the rest of industry. "This is wrong policy, and it should never be implemented. We will oppose it," he said.

Shyam Bihari Misra, senior leader and trader, said this was an attempt to divide the state on caste lines. The division of UP into small states is not going to benefit anybody.

Stock Brokers Association President Sushil Kanodia said this seemed an attempt to reduce UP's importance, and its clout in politics, industry and trade. The division of UP will adversely impact the development of the state.
