Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Friday stated that BJP has suffered major setback in the assembly elections as their 'Hindutva nationalism emotion' is not working anymore.

 

"BJP has suffered a major setback in these elections. In Haryana, the party did not get the majority. The party has suffered a setback in the by-elections conducted in Gujarat, Bihar and other places as well," said Yechury.

The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday slammed the BJP for seeking support of controversial MLA Gopal Kanda to form the government in Haryana, saying the saffron party is aligning with a rape accused in a state where it launched the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme.

 

A day after the election results for the assembly polls in Haryana were declared, Kanda, who won the Sirsa seat, on Friday claimed that he and the Independents have "decided to extend unconditional support to the BJP".

NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, who defeated his cousin and sitting MLA Pankaja Munde in the Maharashtra Assembly polls held on October 21, on Friday stopped his supporters from raising slogans against the latter.

 

The NCP leader beat Pankaja, a minister in the outgoing Devendra Fadnavis government, by a margin of over 30,000 votes in Parli in the state polls, results of which were announced on Thursday.

Asserting that neither the BJP or the Congress is untouchable for him, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala said on Friday that he will support any party which agrees on a common minimum programme with his organisation.

 

Speaking to reporters following a meeting of the JJP legislative party of 10 MLAs, Chautala kept his cards close to chest over whether his party will support the BJP or the Congress. He said he had so far not spoken to either the BJP or the Congress on the matter.

BJP vice president Uma Bharti on Friday asked the party not to forget its "moral mission" and suggested that it should not seek support from controversial Independent MLA Gopal Kanda, who is accused of abetting suicides of a woman and her mother, to form government in Haryana.

 

In her tweets, Bharti, also a former union minister, said she will request the BJP not to forget its moral mission and ensure that it gets support from people who are as "clean" as its own workers are.

Almost half of BJP's sitting MLAs lose in Haryana

Almost half of ruling BJP's sitting MLAs lost the elections, including eight ministers, as Haryana threw up a fractured mandate on Thursday.

 

The losers included ministers Ram Bilas Sharma, Capt Abhimanyu and O P Dhankar. Some of the prominent legislators who lost included Latika Sharma, Prem Lata, Bakshish Singh Virk and Bhagwan Dass Kabirpanthi.

 

As many as 21 sitting MLAs of the BJP lost to their rivals and at the same time more than half of the sitting legislators emerged as winners.

Shivaji's descendant loses Satara Lok Sabha byelection

BJP candidate Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji and two-time NCP MP from Satara in western Maharashtra, lost byelection from the constituency on Thursday.

 

Bhosale, who had resigned and joined the BJP before the Maharashtra Assembly polls, necessitating the Lok Sabha byelection in Satara, lost to the NCP's Shriniwas Patil by 87,717 votes. Patil bagged 6,36,620 votes, while Bhosale got 5,48, 903 votes. Interestingly, 10,159 voters pressed the None Of the Above (NOTA) button.
