Here's a look at the anatomy of votes in Lok Sabha elections 2019

The landslide victory of Narendra Modi-led BJP has actually obviated any need for further analysis. But a deeper look at the results throws up some interesting facts about the sweeping victory:

Tough contests agnostic to party or region

 

 

Twenty-nine seats were won with a margin of less than 10,000 votes in the election, and 14 parties emerged victorious in these.

This means that thin-slice victories were dispersed across parties, or, that no party benefitted too much or lost too much narrowly.

The BJP won 10 seats in such a manner, while the Congress, five. But the Congress lost eight seats in this manner, with a margin of 1 per cent or less.

BJP is master of massive victories

 

In thumping victories, the BJP was unmatched. There were 17 seats in 542 contested seats where the victory margin was more than 5 lakh votes. The BJP won 15, while the DMK the remaining two. The Congress topped charts in losing seats massively, occupying 13 runner-up positions out of 17 in crushing defeats.

BJP’s arch enemy

This is reflected if we look at how differently the two national parties performed when they fought against each other, and when they fought other regional forces. The BJP’s average victory margin against a Congress opponent was 270,000 votes, while it was smaller, at 180,000 votes against a non-Congress opponent. Similarly, the Congress’s average victory margin against non-BJP opponents was 130,000. But wherever it won against BJP head-on, its average victory margin plummeted to 95,000.
