Area under mustard seed is expected to be higher by 5% and will be around 7.2 million hectares(ha).

Last year the area under mustard seed was 6.8 million ha, but the crop last year was impacted due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Last year the total production was around 6.7 million tonne.

"With high prices, farmers will plant rape-mustard in a big way. If winter and spring temperatures remain normal, we can expect a very good rape-mustard crop in India for harvest in March,” said Dorab Mistry, director of Godrej International.

India's edible oil imports for the following year is expected to be around 10 million tonne, the same as the current year, if India has a good rabi crop, Mistry added.

Mustard seed is grown in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

"There is a high possibility for mustard seed acreage to be around the same as that in FY11 as the weather seems favourable as well as farmers have received good returns last year,” said Vedika Narvekar, a research analyst at Angel Broking, a Mumbai based broking house.
