SAIL's raw materials division (RMD), catering to the need of its eastern sector plants""Bokaro Steel Plant, Durgapur Steel Plant and Rourkela Steel Plant""is aiming for an increase in production of iron ore to 14.06 million tonne during the current fiscal.
 
RMD achieved the highest ever production of 12.94 million tonne during 2004-05 since inception, surpassing the previous best of 12.79 million tonne in fiscal 03-04.
 
RMD's iron ore mines at Kiriburu, Meghataburu and Bolani also achieved highest ever production of 3.62 million tonne, 3.57 million tonne and 3.32 million tonne, respectively.
 
Barsua iron mines produced 1.34 million tonne and recorded a growth of 14.5 per cent over the previous year. During the financial year no iron ore was purchased for the three plants as against the purchase of 99,000 tonne in the previous year.
 
RMD is planning to augment production further.
 
A 600 tonne per hour crushing and screening plant at Bolani is expected shortly.
 
Loading facilities are also being expanded.
 
In addition, preparatory work for developing the south block at Kiriburu and the central block at Meghataburu have been taken at hand.
 
To meet the further requirements of iron ore both in terms of quality and quantity RMD has planned to develop new mines at Taladih and Thakurani.
 
RMD has shown a remarkable improvement in the area of quality, cost reduction and productivity. Average man power productivity of mechanised iron ore mines has improved by 3 per cent during the year.
 
Similarly, cost reduction figures have touched Rs 9 crore during 2004-05 which was Rs 7.2 crore in 2003-04.
