Abdur Rehman a facilitator for AQIS: Cuttack Police

Cuttack Police on Wednesday said that apprehended Al Qaeda terrorist Abdur Rehman appeared to be a facilitator and an organiser for the activities of Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub Continent (AQIS).

A joint team of Delhi Police and Bhubaneswar Police on early Wednesday had apprehended Rehman from his home at a village in Odisha's Cuttack District.

Thirty seven-year-old Rehman, is ascertained to have links and connections with Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub Continent (AQIS).

"A joint team conducted a raid on Abdur Rehman's house at midnight. He was apprehended. His mobile, tablet and passport has also been seized. Since he is wanted in Delhi Police Special Cell case and we got a requisition from them, he is now being produced before the magistrate in Cuttack after getting transit remand. He will be taken to Delhi for further interrogation and further lawful activities against him," R.P Sharma, Police Commissioner, Cuttack Police, told the press conference.

It is revealed from the preliminary investigation that Rehman got himself educated in Madrasa and then in Deoband University in U.P.

"He has done PhD in some religious subject. He is apparently running a Madrasa in Tangi Police station of Cuttack. It is ascertained that he has got links and connection with some activists of AQIS, especially in Jharkhand, U.P, and Karnataka. He has got some international links in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Dubai and some of the Indian origin people living in London," he added.

He ascertained that further investigation will reveal greater details about Rehman.

"He appears to be a facilitator and an organizer for the activities of AQIS and engaged in recruitments in terrorist organisations," he said.

Earlier, the Delhi police had arrested a suspected Al Qaeda terrorist who is a native of Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh.

Asif, aged 41 years old was detained after the Delhi Police reportedly received intelligence that he along with the other suspect terrorists were planning an attack in the national capital.

The reported threat was that Al Qaeda targeting public places, tourist spots, iconic buildings, and places of worship in these cities.
