Can Fight Cancer (CFC), an NGO involved in spreading awareness against cancer, organised the second Annual Cancer Awareness Walkathon here on Sunday. Over a thousand people participated in the event by walking for nearly 2.5 kilometres in the civil lines area of the city.
The walk was attended by cancer survivors and their families and families of those patients who succumbed to cancer, who were accompanied by political leaders of the area, administrative officials and health care professionals from leading hospitals of Ludhiana.
People had gathered to express their solidarity with cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and medical professionals.
"There is a need to hold such events more often. A healthy population is important for building a healthy nation. The message conveyed by the event is giving is not only awareness against the disease and importance of early detection but also encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle," said Congress MP from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu, who presided over the event.
Meanwhile, the president of the CFC society, R P Jain urged people 'to come back as often as possible' and 'spread wings much beyond the local limits of the city'.
Jain thanked all the people of the city, team members, volunteers and support group members who worked tirelessly day and night to organise the walkathon.
