Defence Minister briefed on upcoming Behrampore Military Station

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley visited the Eastern Theatre on Sunday and was briefed on the upcoming Behrampore Military Station in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.

Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh, who is on a visit to Eastern Theatre from August 23 to 25, and Lt Gen MMS Rai, Eastern Army Commander, were also present during the 30-minute briefing held near the camp site whose foundation plaque was earlier laid by President Pranab Mukherjee on February 14.

The project worth Rs. 600 crore in the 250-acre land is set to be an eco-friendly 'model military camp' that will be replicated in all future infrastructural developments of similar military stations wherever feasible.

Located nearly mid-way between Kolkata and Siliguri, the military station when ready will also help boost the local economy in the area.

Earlier, the Army Chief who arrived at Fort William, Headquarters of Eastern Command was briefed on the operational preparedness of the Command on August 23. Before leaving for Behrampore early today, he laid a wreath at the Vijay Smarak.

The Army Chief also visited Panagarh Military Camp where he took stock of the ongoing preparations for raising of the Army's Strike Corps.

He later left on a two-day visit of forward areas in the Eastern Sector.
