British tennis star Johanna Konta has pulled out of this week's WTA Charleston event.

Konta has cited a shoulder injury and illness for the same which developed during her Miami Open victory.

"Charleston is a great tournament and I was really looking forward to taking part," Sport24 quoted Konta as saying in a statement.

"I was battling a slight shoulder injury and sickness during Miami which has taken hold since the end of the tournament."

In Konta's absence, Madison Keys becomes the highest ranked player in the tournament.

Konta on Monday surged into the world's top 10 in the latest women's tennis rankings issued by the WTA.

The 25-year-old climbed to her career-best seventh spot after defeating Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 in the finals of the Miami Open.
