The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the secretary of the Rural Development Ministry and chief secretaries of seven states in connection with non-payment of MGNREGA wages.
The states to which the notices have been sent are Maharashtra, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.
Taking a suo motu cognisance of media reports that seven families across Maharashtra and Jharkhand lost their members, who killed themselves owing to delayed payments under the MGNREGA scheme, the NHRC took the step.
The NHRC has asked for a report on the matter within six weeks from these states.
