A British security firm, which is under investigation over allegedly overcharging the government for tagging criminals, could reportedly be in line to win a lucrative contract to provide stewards and guards at next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Security company G4S, which was in the bidding to provide stewards for Glasgow 2014, has been heavily criticised for its part in the London Olympics when thousands of military personnel had to be drafted in after the company admitted it might not be able to provide enough guards.
According to the Mirror, although the Glasgow Games will require far fewer staff than in London, it still has an overall security budget in the region of 90 million pounds and the Games chiefs have published a list of 19 firms that have been 'invited to sign up to framework agreements' at the next July's competition.
Glasgow 2014 organisers said that all companies invited to participate in the safety and security programme had gone through a 'robust and competitive' tendering process, adding that the duty of security personnel will be to protect while stewards will maintain spectator safety.
G4S is one of the largest employers in Scotland, providing services at stadiums including Hampden Park and at major events such as the T in the Park music festival, the report added.
