World number one Novak Djokovic has pulled out of next week's Cincinnati Masters due to a left wrist injury, the tournament organizers has confirmed.

Announcing the news, Djokovic said that he felt extremely sad to confirm that he won't be able to play in this year's Cincinnati in the wake of a recurring injury, that has taken its toll due to a very busy and active schedule throughout the year, Sport24 reported.

Djokovic, who did manage to reach the finals of the 14 out of his past 15 ATP Masters Series appearances, insisted that he is still hopeful to return to Cincinnati and clinch the only trophy he has been missing in the Master Series.

The Serbian, who is a five-time finalist in Cincinnati, was earlier reduced to tears after he suffered a 7-6(4), 7-6(2) defeat to Juan Martin del Potro in the men's Rio Olympic tennis tournament on Sunday.

A day after the exit from the men's singles event, Djokovic went on to suffer another defeat as he and his men's doubles partner Nenad Zimonjic lost at the hands of Brazilian duo of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in the round two of the men's doubles event of the Summer Games.
