The union cabinet on Wednesday approved the revised cost estimates for eight new IITs proposed at Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna and Ropar, an official statement said.

The revised cost estimate is Rs 13,990 crore for setting up the eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) over a period of 11 years from 2008-09 to 2018-19. The original project cost was Rs 6,080 crore.

The approval for these IITs was first given by the Cabinet in July 2008.

"The students strength in each IIT at the end of the project will be 2,360. The total student capacity will be 18,880 in these eight IlTs by the end of the 11th year, that is, March 2019," the statement said.

"These institutes will meet the emerging needs of the industry and the economy as a whole for skilled technical manpower," the statement said.
