Consumer price inflation decelerates to 9.39 percent

India's consumer price-based inflation (CPI) decelerated to 9.39 percent in April from 10.39 percent in March, government data showed Monday.

However, prices of products like cereal, pulses, eggs, fish and meat accelerated.

The CPI stood at 10.39 percent in March, as compared to 10.91 percent in February.

This is the first time in the past seven months that retail inflation measured in terms of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has come down.

According to the data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), retail inflation stood at 9.73 percent for urban areas in April as compared to 10.38 percent in the previous month.

For rural areas, CPI stood at 9.16 percent in the month under review from 10.33 percent in the previous month.

Among protein-based products, cereals were expensive by 16.65 percent, pulses became costlier by 10.91 percent during the month under review. Egg, fish and meat became dearer by 13.66 percent.

Sugar too became dearer by 10.49 percent.
