India on Tuesday named D. Bala Venkatesh Varma, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1988 batch, as its new Ambassador to Russia.

Currently serving as India's Ambassador to Spain, Varma is expected to take up the new assignment shortly, according to a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry.

He will succeed Pankaj Saran in Moscow.
