Jat stir: Gurgaon village heads seek action against 'miscreants'

Newly elected sarpanches (village heads) in Gurgaon on Saturday urged Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to deal strictly with people demanding reservation for Jats who were behaving like "miscreants", destroying public property and firing at the security forces.

Over one-and-a-half dozen village heads of places close to Gurgaon city like Sikanderpur (Badha), Shikohpur, Nakhraula, Manesar, Rampura and Tikli held a panchayat here.

"It was unanimously decided that villagers will support the Haryana government and we are ready to cooperate with the administration in any form," one of the organisers said.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the sarpanches said the majority of the people demanding reservation for the Jat community were behaving like miscreants, destroying public property and even firing at the security forces.

"Is it the right way to express one's views and demand reservation in OBC category?" one of them asked.

"Many of them are in fact committing treason and they should be booked on charges of sedition," farmer leader Om Prakash Yadav and sarpanch Sunder lal Yadav said in unison.

They said the Jats were a robust community and did not require OBC quota, as they have a high social, political and economic status in Haryana.
