Eco-friendly chief minister

Guess what is on top of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s agenda. No, it is not fighting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the coming Lok Sabha elections but saving the sparrows from dying, at least in Delhi. With the Opposition almost non-existent and she having won for the third time in a row, Dikshit can afford to attend to more serious matters like biodiversity. Recently, her education secretary — Rina Ray, talking at a climate change awareness initiative in the capital, said how the ‘beautiful’ laws of Lutyens Delhi had ensured that not a single sparrow survived. The insects they used to feed on have been snuffed out of the area by spraying insecticides on the lawns that sprawl the New Delhi area. Hence, the chief minister has now insects and sparrows on top of her agenda for Delhi. She was using the eco clubs of the Delhi schools as her green force to bring back insects and sparrows to the Capital, Ray said.
