Cases were registered against 30 students in connection with the violence, police said.
Twelve students were injured, three of them seriously, in the clash, they said.
Vice Chancellor A D N Vajpayee appointed a committee, headed by Dean of Studies Dr Suresh Kumar, to determine the circumstances leading to the clash.
He also dissolved the SFI-dominated Students Central Association (SCA).
The Vice Chancellor said those involved in violence would face stringent action, including expulsion from the varsity.
The ABVP alleged SFI activists armed with sharp-edged weapons attacked their members.
The SFI condemned dissolution of the SCA and threatened to launch an agitation for removal of the Vice Chancellor.
