People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), have selected two cats- Mustard and Eva- whose guardians are Guwahati residents - for 'Rescued Cat Alive' contest.
After sifting through hundreds of photographs of lovable cats - as well as their rescue stories - the judges selected two out of the ten finalists whose guardians are Guwahati's Nandini Baruva and Karishma Deka, a release issued by PETA today said.
Mustard was drenched and dragging himself outside Baruva's house when she found him with a spinal nerve injury and with her help, Mustard has recovered and is playful.
Deka rescued Eva, then just a kitten, when dogs were barking at her outside her house on a stormy winter night and the golden feline is now a beloved member of the family.
"Mustard and Eva are lucky cats, indeed, and they have returned the favour of being rescued by bringing much love and joy into their guardians' lives", says PETA India CEO Poorva Joshipura.
"All rescued cats are already winners because their lives were saved by people who love them for who they are", she added.
PETA India is holding the contest to encourage prospective guardians to adopt animals from the streets or shelters instead of buying them from pet shops or breeders, as these facilities often keep animals in dismal conditions and contribute to the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis.
The guardian will receive a certificate, a copy of Ingrid Newkirk and Jane Ratcliffe's book 'One Can Make a Difference', a 'My Cat Is a Rescue' T-shirt, a PETA T-shirt, and a cute cat toy.
