According to police, these fake currencies have been deposited by several banks following Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) order last November to deposit fake currencies with the police.
"Parliament Street police station has been made the nodal police station by RBI to register cases of Fake Currency Indian Notes (FICN), so various banks from time to time deposit such counterfeit currency with us. It is not possible to give an exact figure but the amount is in crores," said a senior police official.
RBI's directive to deposit fake notes with the police has been aimed at reducing the flow of such notes in the market.
Recently, arrested LeT terrorist Abdul Karim Tunda told police that majority of such fake currencies are routed to India from Pakistan via Bangladesh and Nepal.
