CPSEs employed 14.04 lakh people (including contractual workers) in 2012-13 compared to 14.5 lakh in 2011-12, showing a reduction of 3.28 per cent in total employee strength.
Moreover, hit by economic slowdown, the number of profit- making central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) in the country declined in 2012-13 even as loss-making PSUs rose during the same period.
During 2012-13, the number of profit-making CPSEs have come down to 149 while the number of loss-making CPSEs has increased from 64 to 79. Last year, 161 CPSEs had reported profit, according to the Public Enterprises Survey.
The total turnover or gross revenue from operation of all CPSEs during 2012-13 stood at Rs 19,45,777 crore as compared to Rs 18,22,049 crore in the previous year, showing a rise of 6.79 per cent.
However, the growth rate of 6.79 per cent in CPSEs turnover is much lower than the growth rate of 21.63 per cent registered last year.
Notwithstanding this, it is seen that the profit of profit-making CPSEs rose 14 per cent to Rs 1,43,559 crore during 2012-13 compared to Rs 1,25,929 crore in 2011-12.
Meanwhile, the loss of loss-making CPSEs also increased marginally to Rs 28,260 crore from Rs 27,683 crore in 2011-12.
The overall net profit of all 229 CPSEs during 2012-13 stood at Rs 1,15,298 crore compared to Rs 98,246 crore during 2011-12 showing an increase of 17.36 per cent.
However, the rate of growth in loss has been considerably less this year at 2.08 per cent as compared to the last year's 26.89 per cent.
Moreover, the Market Capitalisation of CPSEs as a percentage of BSE M-Cap decreased to 17.64 per cent in 2012-13 from 20.24 per cent during the previous fiscal.
According to the survey, there were 277 CPSEs in 2012-13, out of which 229 were in operation. The remaining 48 CPSEs were under construction. The overall performance of CPSEs during 2012-13 has shown an improvement over the previous years.
