Ahmedabad is the first city to digitise data of criminal records and to be equipped with the software titled Programme for Identification and Arrest of Criminals (PINAC).

The success of the pilot project here will determine whether the project can be implemented across the state, police said .

"The Master Criminal Record (MCR) cards, under this software, will contain 33 details of known criminals and suspects involved in a crime including his name, photograph, modus operandi, among others," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Himanshu Shukla said here at the Crime Branch office in Gaekwad Haveli.

The MCR, Shukla said, will help the common man in lodging complaints easily and aid police in crime detection.

When asked how the software programme would help in crime prevention, Shukla said, it would act as a deterrent for criminals who would be nabbed immediately as soon as a complaint is filed and the complainant identifies him.

Earlier, complainants and witnesses had to be brought to crime branch's office as all records concerning modus operandi and details of history-sheeters are stored there, police said, adding that the whole exercise was time-consuming and troublesome for both police and public.

With the introduction of PINAC, police will be able to show names and photos of suspects to the complaints sitting at their police stations. (MORE)
