Traditional methods of crime investigation have lost their value and importance, and hence the police force needs to upgrade knowledge and skills to match new challenges, said new DGP of Odisha, R P Sharma.
Sharma said this while inaugurating the 65th Odisha Police Duty Meet here today.
"With the change of time, many new and complex crimes are being committed now. Cybercrime, organised crimes, economic offences are new challenges before the police," he said.
"We have to adopt scientific methods of investigation to solve them," Sharma said.
As many as 187 competitors and 21 police dogs from 37 police districts of the state are participating in the three-day meet.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is scheduled to attend the valedictory function.
The participants will compete on subjects like observation and police portrait, medico-legal test, fingerprint identification, photography, DNA fingerprinting, technical surveillance, cybercrime, laws, rules and computer awareness, an officer said.
The winners will be selected to participate in the All India Police Duty Meet, the officer added.
