A bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia also asked Director General of Police (DGP) M A Ganpati to submit his report within a week.
The order came on a petition filed by Laksar (Haridwar) resident Amit Goswami who alleged that on the night of December 30, 2016, police forcefully entered his house and took away his wife.
Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, advocate Lalit Miglani said Goswami had eloped with the girl, he was in love with against the wishes of their family.
She, however, was held hostage there and managed to run away. On December 30, at around midnight, the police entered their home and took away the wife handing her over to her parents.
After this the husband approached the high court to seek relief against the police's arbitrary action.
