It's a matter of shame for Haryana: Randeep Hooda on Rewari gangrape

Actor Randeep Hooda Wednesday said the gangrape of a 19-year-old woman in Rewari is a "matter of shame" for Haryana.

The actor, who hails from the state, said there has to be a high accountability for the crime and the perpetrators should be brought to justice.

"It's absolutely horrendous, the people should be brought to task and we have to start setting examples in our society... Positive ones, rather harsh ones for people who do wrong things, so that it would be a deterrent. It is absolutely unpardonable.

"I'm not sure what course the law is taking. As a citizen, I can assure you that this is something which is absolutely intolerable and should be punished with the harshest of things possible," Hooda told reporters here.

The actor was speaking at the launch of the Indo International Premier Kabaddi League.

Asked why despite sterling examples like wrestlers Phogat sisters bringing laurels to Haryana, the state was unable to protect its daughters, Hooda said the incident was a largely reflection of how India stands as a society today.

"There has to be a high accountability. It is a matter of shame for our state that such things happen where women are actually very powerful in sports, if you see, the Haryanvi women have done a lot more and even in the UPSC exams, they have done very well.

"It's a very unfortunate thing to happen and it should be nipped in the bud. It's not just a reflection of Haryana but also of us Indians as a society," he said.

Rewari Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Duggal and a woman assistant sub-inspector have been suspended over alleged delay in taking action in the case.

The rape survivor, a board exam topper hailing from Rewari, was abducted from a bus stop in Kanina town of Mahendragarh district last Wednesday when she was on her way to a coaching class.

She was allegedly drugged and gangraped in a room adjoining a tubewell in an agricultural field, the police had said.
