The inquiry was ordered by state Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Choudhary Zulfkar Ali while chairing a meeting to review the progress of verification of ration cards in Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley, an official spokesperson said.
While scrutinising the records, it was found that ration has been issued to non-existent families, he said.
Ordering a detailed inquiry by the Crime Branch of the state polcie, the minister said, "A thorough enquiry is needed in the matter and stringent action under the rules would be taken against negligent officials."
