Arvind Kejriwal, who took on Narendra Modi from Varanasi, however, stood a distant second to BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate.
Barring Delhi, where an AAP candidate bagged second position, most of its high profile nominees in other parts of the country, fared poorly.
In Amethi, where Kumar Vishwas had taken on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, the poet-turned politician was at fourth position. Incidentally, Vishwas had stationed himself in the constituency and undertook a relentless campaign for more than five months.
Similar was the case in Gurgaon where AAP leader and party strategist Yogendra Yadav stood at fourth position winning just 79,452 votes.
In Mumbai, the party had pinned high hopes on Medha Patkar but the social activist secured third position bagging 76,451 votes while her BJP rival and winner Kirit Somaiya polled over 5.25 lakh votes.
Mayank Gandhi, the party's face in Maharashtra, who had taken on former Union minister and AICC General Secretary Gurudas Kamat from Mumbai North west and banker-turned- politician Meera Sanyal, who contested against Union minister Milind Deora from Mumbai South, stood at fourth positions.
AAP candidate against Modi in Vadodara Sunil Kulkarni stood third winning only 10,101 votes.
